Super Castlevania IV is a good game, but one of the best in the series..? Far from it, I'd say.

Simon's multi-directional whipping is a welcome edition to the gameplay. While it can kill some of the challenge, it's not necessarily a bad thing. Simon can also swing with his whip as well, which is a little janky but otherwise well implemented. The stage design here is nothing to write home about. Much like in the first few games, you get some cool set pieces, but nothing too memorable. Speaking of being memorable, this game's stages are hard to tell apart, mainly because the color variation in this game is so atrocious. Castlevania III managed to strike a perfect balance between colorful stages that still retained a dark atmosphere. Super Castlevania IV throws this all out of the window, leaving us with a game mostly colored in with brown and gray.

As for the soundtrack, it's honestly disappointing that it's so forgettable. Usually, Castlevania games deliver us a ton of bops with each new entry into the series, but Castlevania IV is not the same. It starts out great with 'Theme of Simon', but quickly looses any traction. 'The Trick Manor' themes are alright, but besides that, just a bunch of random ambient-style tracks.

Super Castlevania IV isn't a bad game, and it does a lot of things right. It's just so hard for me to see this as one of the greatest games in the series when something like Bloodlines (which would be the next major home console release after Rondo of Blood) blows it out of the water by fixing almost all of my complaints. A Genesis game (the console notorious for some really dull graphics and music) manages to look ten-times as nice and sound ten-times as good over a SNES game, yet that game gets ignored. It's just strange to me, but at the end of the day, I still had fun with this one.

SCIV is overrated as hell

An outstanding soundtrack befitting a classic gem. Super Castlevania IV hands down has the most immersive and atmospheric soundtrack in the entire franchise, with one particular track, Dracula's Theme, being the perfect example of how Konami managed to capture the spirit of those dreadful dark times in European history that the series takes place in. They've never again achieved such level of success, unfortunately; ever since they plunged the series into Anime territory starting Rondo of Blood in 1993, the music, although for the most part has stayed strong, it somehow has faltered and eschewed the sense of ambiance over more action-oriented themes.
