Description

In 1994 those that pre-ordered Sonic the Hedgehog 3 from Toys "R" Us in the US the music CD album Sonic the Hedgehog Boom. This album contained music from the US Sonic CD soundtrack Sonic Spinball. However, the US Sonic CD music tracks weren't just straight copies of the music from the game. Many had extended intros, extra instruments and entirely of sections. Unlike the Japanese soundtrack's beta loops, where we know how they were supposed to play, and the technical limitations that caused them to be removed, we know nothing about the extended bits from the Boom album or even if they meant to be used in the US soundtrack at all. For all know they could been created just for the album release. The only small clue that suggests the album tracks were going to be used in the US soundtrack comes from Stardust Speedway Bad Future, as the released version fades out right as a section exclusive to the album starts. Some of these exclusive parts from the album release were into the Taxman release of the US soundtrack, but not all of it. As part of my Missing Music Restoration mod I've included as many of these exclusive album bits as I could as long as it didn't interfere with looping. Because we have no idea how the US album tracks were originally intended to be used my US restorations shouldn't be looked at as "official" like my JP restorations and instead as just another fun way to experience Sonic CD's US soundtrack.

Sonic CD (Japan) is superior, but if we give Sonic CD (US) a chance, we might find some good songs despite its bad reputation.

The US ost isn't bad honestly. Its just that JP is more memorable and fits the game's vibes more. I really like the US Palmtree Panic, Tidal Tempest, Quartz Quadrant, Wacky Workbench, and Stardust Speedway tracks also the special stage theme and inviciblity is a bop.

with the US soundtrack i am endlessly questioning myself, who the hell was the one who thought on what the perfect fit for songs would be, like who the hell does look at a quartz mine and think "yeah rock n roll music fits well here!" or to a level that is supposed to sound (what i describe as) chaotic (idk how to describe it better (and i mean OFC Wacky Workbench)) and say "hmm chill music would be best for this stage" like WHO thinks like that?

What if it was like the Street Fighter II soundtrack? For it, Yoko Shimomura just composed 12 music themes for the characters, without looking at them or their stages, they were assigned afterwards, and perhaps, the music inspired character designs and level layouts, because they fit like a shoe (except in Sonic CD they may not fit because they could have been composed before looking at the levels, just an idea.)

So you would rather have only 1 soundtrack instead of the original one and the US one!? I always prefer more music! It's only bad in comparison.

i kinda agree, it sucks tho its just US's box art shenanigans but on music (you KNOW what i mean)
so we cant rlly complain or we couldve never complained about it because they wouldve done it anyway

the US Sonic CD music is pretty bad, for example "Palmtree Panic (Present)" sounds out of place to be honest. Other songs are just weird, i mean there might be a few good ones but the rest sucks.

I agree

waht are the lyrics from Metallic Madness supposed to say

They all dread this place we’re in
Because of you, he's going through it
Gotta get through; you know the deal
But you're not through. He's going through it
Get yourself ready for a fight
This time he's superb
Yo, we're outta here

Thanks. I love gradius too. Totally underrated game. Whats your favourite? Mine is a cross between III, II, and V.

Mine is I, II III and mostly V and not much for IV but it's a good game! There's also a spin offs called salamander, parodius and otomedius! they're pretty good too and I also enjoyed them.

The only recent sonic game that did this (that I know of) is sonic superstars. If you haven’t heard/seen it, go take a look.

I've heard of it, but I never researched it or forgot about it.

Absolutely! It's one of the best intro cutscene songs I've ever heard in a Sonic game!

The Only bad music US Version had was the Boss theme and Game over due to it being nightmare fuel

I think the only good one is Wacky Workbench and Good Future Stardust Speedway(Stardust Speedway's Good Future had been playing on Metal Sonic Race unlike the JP version since it uses bad future for the race)

EXACTLY

Also the fact that Metallic Madness bad future is way different than the album version is weird 'cuz they could had used the album version as the NORMAL version

you know, i feel like the JP versions of the soundtrack are like how Sonic sees the level but the US is how the ambience really is.

Obviously not, most Sonic fans are 9.

Yeah... I mean, Sonic was kinda to appeal to children so like... it makes a lot of sense.

This blows. Why can't I find the original Redbook Audio 22Khz Sample Rate versions from the Mega CD original anywhere?
I literally have to open Kega Fusion and emulate an ISO of Sonic CD just to hear the music how it's supposed to sound and then I can't hear the Past themes because they are encoded in PCM.

The dynamic range in these files is clearly compressed. And so is the bitrate which isn't constant 1411kpbs but it's variable dogphooey even in the FLAC files which makes me think that the FLAC files are just bloated MP3 files. No doubt sourced from the Taxman remaster, along with those awful beta loops.

Louder =/= Better
The reason the original Mega/Sega CD versions of the tracks sound quieter is because they have much higher dynamic range. So if you have a non-welfare audio setup they sound much better than this.

Stop serving us trash, Sonic community.

FLAC aren't just "bloated MP3 files.". They're bloated because they're lossless but more compressed than WAV and is great for metadata since they're better for albums than WAV, they also support multi-channel audio, which is something WAV would normally exclusively do. And the "Past" themes aren't actually FLAC or Redbook Audio, they're .vgm files, SEGA CD supports both it's old VGM format from the Mega Drive/Genesis, which are basically like music tracker files. I know this since I downloaded the Sonic CD from JoshW. (I don't get my music from JoshW unless it's from N64, SNES, Genesis, NES, or older consoles.) If you want to convert VGM to any regular audio format, I'd recommend ZXTune, VLC (Doesn't support SEGA CD VGM files though), foobar2000 (Requires an extension.), and Winamp. (Also requires an extension.)

The short opening theme of Sonic Boom could be used in the screensaver of the animated series Sonic Boom.

Metallic Madness "P" Mix is good but in a way I can't put it through words

Absolute banger, yet not very fitting for a past theme. (You do remember Metallic Madness was still a factory in the past, right? Oh, yeah.)

I think the reason it's like this is because Robotnik is portrayed to be a threatening villain in the West, so the music is scary-sounding to reflect that.
For the Game Over theme, I think the vision is in a serious tone, like "You are dead. Little Planet will forever be doomed and no one can save it." Instead of JP's "HAHA, YOU LOSE"

the US Sonic CD music is pretty bad, for example "Palmtree Panic (Present)" sounds out of place to be honest. Other songs are just weird, i mean there might be a few good ones but the rest sucks.

here's the lyrics of "Stardust speedway"
[Music]
Get funky, be funky
Stay funky, yo hustle, hustle
Get funky, be funky
Stay funky, yo hustle, hustle
Hit it!
Turn it up! (hit it!–hit it!) Get down! (Uh!)
[Music]
(hey, hey, hey, hey)
Get funky, be funky
Stay funky, yo hustle, hustle
Get funky, be funky
Stay funky, yo hustle, hustle
[Music]
Turn it up! (hit it!–hit it!) Get down!
[Music]
Hit it!
[Music]
Hurry to your star!

Btw the hues were supposed to be "hey"

Wasnt this release already on shrine? Some did indeed sound compressed if its the same as I listened back then but I think thats a problem with the japan anniversary cd since the mastering and endings were never good.

Nvm, actually the re-engineered soundtrack seems to fix and improve many issues.
