Is this how the bgm really sounded? Seems unprofessionally shrill and seemingly below the standard of the time.

Please excuse my English. One of the Seta/Allumer quirks, if you will. Most of their games use the Seta PCM X1-010, an 8-bit 16-channel wavetable chip that was co-developed with Allumer. For whatever reason that I can not quite fathom, some of their titles use short PCM loops of music. The usual procedure for a musician with such sound hardware at hand would be providing all the samples of a song repeatedly and having the chip playing them via dedicated track/song data. Like tracker music, essentially.
