Description

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up. The game offers two playable characters to choose from, each having two shot types. Reimu Hakurei, the miko of the Hakurei Shrine, covers a wide area of the screen with weaker attacks and a small hitbox, whereas Marisa Kirisame relies on her speed and power to make up for her thinner attack spread. The player can enter Focus mode, which slows the player character, making it easier to dodge enemy attacks. Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is the only Windows game that does not show the player's hitbox while focusing – this is remedied in Perfect Cherry Blossom. The player has the option to use bombs, which will grant temporary invulnerability, clear the screen of enemy bullets, and deal immense damage, but the player has a limited supply of bombs, meaning they must be used cautiously. Bombs act differently depending on the character and shot type chosen. If the player is hit by an enemy bullet, and uses a bomb within a six frame window, they can avoid death, a technique known as "deathbombing". Unique to Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, the amount of time in which a player can perform a deathbomb is decreased each time it is successfully done.

This soundtrack is probably one of the most unique one's I've heard in Touhou Project.
It was made right at the tail end of that 4 year transitional period between Mystic Square and EoSD where ZUN was experimenting more with non-FM soundtracks (see: https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/seihou-project-1-shuusou-gyoku-original-soundtrack - Shuusou Gyoku) and playing around more with MIDI devices and the sort.

EoSD's soundtrack was originally designed with the SC-88Pro in mind, however during development ZUN obtained an SD-90 and decided that the game would have a default wav soundtrack. So what we hear in the game is somewhat modified SC-88Pro midis with SD-90 samples. It gives the game a unique feeling.

I became a fan of Touhou a little while ago because of silly fumo GIFs. Over the past few months I've been learning about the games and listening to their music, though I'm probably never going to play any of them. I didn't expect to find one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard while listening to the soundtracks (Locked Girl ~ The Girl's Sealed Room).
I've only listened up to Touhou 8, so I'm excited to see how much better the music may get beyond that.
