If you're not familiar with Tokimeki Memorial, this game marked a sea change in Japanese gaming. While there was a growing bishojofication of the Japanese gaming market from around 1992 onward, Tokimeki Memorial would domesticate the previously nsfw dating game mechanic for a broader audience. As a result a tsunami of Japanese games integrated dating into their titles and the mechanic would leak over into the West. For instance, Stardew Valley's dating mechanic all the way in the late 2010s can be traced back to Tokimeki Memorial via the original Harvest Moon, which came out two years after Tokimeki Memorial. Anyway, a major reason this game was so successful was that Konami supposedly was going out of business and bet the house on it. And, it shows! Almost 200 tracks and they're all pretty good. How many other console games from the 90s do that?

There are three renditions of this soundtrack: The Turbografx, the Playstation/Saturn CD Audio, and the Super Nintendo. The Super Nintendo version is the strongest (and also latest) and in my opinion is a perfect 10/10. The Turbografx is weakest but it's still pretty good. The foundational arrangements are great and honestly the two hour length of this album is too short- It could easily be four hours without getting repetitive. The instrumentation quality though can be a bit uneven- many of the earlier season tracks (tracks 5-11) are rougher yet there are still other tracks that capture that beautiful sweet nostalgic Turbografx synth (tracks 92 102, 111, 115). There's also that rich digital sound in track 121. Aside from that, the character themes (tracks 12-25) also tend to be weaker on this album albeit Mira's is surprisingly strong (track 19) whereas it's weaker in other renditions. Aside from that, there's some fun synth machinery sounds and screams in the roller coaster and ferris wheel tracks (124-125). More could be said here, but I'd highly suggest listening to the Super Nintendo rendition in addition to Tokimeki 2 and 3's albums, which are all fantastic.
