Description: Super Mario Bros. is a platform game published and produced by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), known as the Family Computer or Famicom in Japan. It was released in Japan and to U.S. test markets in 1985, and saw a wide release in North America in 1986, followed by a release in Europe and Australasia in 1987. The story of the game centers around the Italian plumber brothers Mario and Luigi, who have stumbled across an entrance to a fantasy world called the Mushroom Kingdom. The kingdom has recently been invaded by the Koopas and their vile king, Bowser, who have transformed its inhabitants, the Toads, into inanimate objects such as stones and bricks. Bowser has even kidnapped Princess Toadstool (known in Japan and later in the West as Peach), the only one with the power to reverse the spell. After one of the surviving residents tells them about these tragic events, the brothers set out to save the princess and the kingdom. To accomplish this mission, they traverse side-scrolling stages while avoiding hazards such as enemies or pits, and making use of power-ups to aid them. This game was designed by the legendary game developers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, of what later became Nintendo EAD; the former is also the creator of the Mario franchise. It was conceived as a "grand culmination" of the lessons the Famicom team had learned in game mechanics and programming over the last three years. Super Mario Bros. has been re-released, ported, and remade on multiple Nintendo systems, and is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games of all time. It was largely responsible for the early success of the NES, the revival of the North American video game industry after the 1983 market crash, and the popularization of the side-scrolling genre, as well as for making Mario an icon of the gaming industry and modern pop culture overall. All characters, enemies, items, and environments appearing in the game are core elements of the Mario franchise, and all of the game's music cues except for the castle theme are likewise part of the franchise's musical core, with the "Ground Theme" in particular being its central theme tune. Additionally, the plot of Bowser kidnapping the princess is frequently reused throughout the main Super Mario series. With 40 million units sold worldwide for its original NES/Famicom release alone, Super Mario Bros. had the highest sales of any title in the franchise until the end of 2021, and was also the world's best-selling video game overall until 2009. | Description: Super Mario Bros is a video game released in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) & Family Computer (FC), released elsewhere between 1986 and 1988.
