Description

Super Mario All-Stars (or Super Mario Collection) is a video game Compilation released in 1993 for Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). The compilation includes Super Mario Bros,Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels,Super Mario Bros 2 (or Super Mario USA in Japan) and Super Mario Bros 3; which were all of the classic Super Mario games released on SNES' prequel console - the NES.

The collection got re-released in 1994 in Europe (this time with addition of Super Mario World),re-released again on the franchise' 25th Anniversary,and lastly for the Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

Agreeing with what others have said of it before, I have to say that the redone soundtracks of Mario's 8-bit games for Super Mario All-Stars are boring and lackluster. True, they did attempt to enhance their respective compositions, but in fact, what was done was honestly not enough.
This game uses exactly the same soundfont from Super Mario World. That soundfont was more than enough for the remade SMB 1 music, which sounds awesomely well-done despite the limited range of instruments. (Though the overworld theme, whose original is iconic, has a few out-of-place notes in it.) The same cannot be said of the other two games, however: the soundtracks of SMB 2 and especially SMB 3 would have benefited from a larger soundfont with additional instruments loaned from other early SNES games by Nintendo, like Pilotwings, F-Zero or SimCity. Because lots of parts in those subgames' songs are better suited to other sampled instruments besides those Oka-chan assigned them to. (And on that note, such additional instruments would be useful for updating the music of SMW as well.)

For some reason I've never realized SMW and SMA used the same soundfont.

The remixes of SMB1 here are awesome. A lot of the SMB2 and SMB3 remixes, however, I find to be very lackluster. Overall, the OST is good, but some of the songs sound so empty compared to their NES counterparts. For example, the final boss in SMB3. In the NES version, the loud square waves make the song feel very frantic. Here it's replaced with some quiet bass...

7/10 OST

At least the Bowser fight theme was done justice in Super Mario RPG a few years later. This whole redone soundtrack is kind of underwhelming aside from a few themes like the SMB1 overworld and underground themes, and I think SMB3 has some good remixes like the overworld, athletic, and underwater.

I never really cared about the music in Mario All-Stars because none of it sounds very memorable to me unlike the NES trilogy (Or quadrilogy if We're including Lost Levels, but it has the exact same music as Mario 1 does). Such as Big Land or Iced Land from Mario 3 which has a very nice beat to it, but in the All-Stars collection, it sounds kinda boring. Oh and to go off topic, the 3D All-Stars collection should've updated all of the game's graphics, the music, and add Mario Galaxy 2.

Super Mario All Stars's Soundtrack Is Pretty Solid. The Game Itself Is A Collection Of The First 3 Games + Lost Levels. (Or Sometimes Mario World Will Be Added to It As Well.) It Has A Save System For Each Game. The Game Was Also Re-Released On The Wii. Overall, Great Collection & It Is One Of The Best Ways To Play Them. Soundtrack:9/10. Game:8.3/10.
