On the release of “MOTHER 3i”
Shogo Sakai

The wonderful album title “MOTHER 3i” was given by Shigesato Itoi, just like “MOTHER 3+” a CD that was released recently.

According to Mr. Itoi, MOTHER 3+ was an album which included things and people outside of the game, “MOTHER 3.” We had Taeko Onuki sing some of the songs, members of Crazy Ken Band perform, and many outside staff including mixers and engineers helped us record them. Some of the songs on the album were written by Keiichi Suzuki and Hirokazu Tanaka, and in that sense, I think the album is a “+” to MOTHER 3.

But what is the meaning behind the “i” in “MOTHER 3i”? According to Mr. Itoi: “It’s the ‘i’ in ‘iPod’ and ‘iTunes,’ but above all, it’s the ‘I’ in the first person.”

“Who is the first person?” I asked. In short, he answered, “I mean you, Sakai.”

During the long development period (10 years!) of MOTHER 3, I, Sakai, wrote many songs for the game, all of which I arranged and mixed myself. In contrast to the “+” in MOTHER 3+, which indicates how open the album was to the outside world, the “i” represents an album that matured internally.

I worked on this project for about a month in the summer of 2006. Strangely enough, I never got stuck.

I think it was because of the concept of “i” that Mr. Itoi gave me.

Before this, I wondered what kind of music the audience would want to hear and I couldn’t settle on a song selection. But I gained motivation after Mr. Itoi chose the name and pushed me, saying, “You’re the one, Sakai.” “I see!” I realized, “I can make an album from my own perspective, featuring songs I like and I’m satisfied with!” I relaxed.

Therefore, the music selection for MOTHER 3i is a reflection of my own taste. If your favorite song isn’t included, I’m sorry!

I've included Sakai-san's notes on each and every track as a .txt file as well, cause it's wayyyyyyy too long to put here. They're pretty enlightening and funny though. @somethingAccurate if you haven't figured it out yet, i bought mother3i by making a jp itunes acc and using a jp itunes gift card, you could do that as well for mother 3+. there's a chance that bonus track is just mixed like that for some reason but it's worth a try (if you buy it and it works out please upload it!!)

MOTHER3i received both a digital-only Japanese and international release, however the quality of the international release (the one on the site before this update) is horrible for some reason, and the Japanese version requires a Japanese credit card or alternative methods of processing your payment. I've been looking for the Japanese release for many years, and I'm sure others have been too. Since this album was only released on iTunes, only lossy .m4a is available.

Hmm... I think I had stumbled upon the Apple Music page one from searching via Google earlier. Is this the same but in ALAC or FLAC?

Out of curiosity, do you have or know where to find the MOTHER 3+ one? There's an exclusive track on iTunes (MOTHER 3 -Love Theme-) and right now the only uploads I can find are of similarly bad quality to the original 3i upload.

@MightyJetters I forgot to actually send a notification, whoops.
I'd prefer just knowing how exactly these were obtained so I can do it myself, though if only certain people can get the track I'm fine with that being the answer, as long as it gets uploaded eventually.

Well, the 10 is because Mother 3 has one of the best soundtracks in gaming history. It's excellent as can be. And the quality of the Mother 3i tracks are also, you gussed it: excellent.
