Kaijū Monogatari's gameplay takes heavily after Dragon Quest with some twists to the Japanese RPG genre. Your 4 playable characters each have their unique starting location, and level up individually until you can regroup them, though the option to separate remains available after reforming a party. You can switch between each of them by selecting the Pass command in the menu. Save point in this game is a town facility that also doubles as a free recovery point. Passages between each continent require clearing a chess-like minigame where you place each party member you have on a 8x8 board and play until you defeat the "king" piece. 2 opposing pieces moving into the same square will start a 1v1 fight (meaning your other party members cannot join in). In the last dungeon, the game will instruct you to open the envelope contained in the game's package which contains the dungeon map. This envelope in turn also has an instruction that you must open it only when you are instructed to do so by the game.
