Name:
Cosmo Gang the Puzzle
Name:
Cosmo Gang: the Puzzle
Description:
Cosmo Gang the Puzzle, in general, is a falling block puzzle video game developed and released by Namco in arcades all over the world in 1992, most specifically in Japan. This version was released in Japan exclusively for the Super Famicomin 1993, while it was localized in Western regions later that year with the name Pac-Attack, which features Pac-Man as the moving orb and the ghosts as the aliens; the gameplay in both versions is kept unmodified.

In both the arcade and console versions of the game, as well as its localized Western version, players control falling L-shapes that are either formed with solid blocks that can be cleared by aligning them horizontally, or with pink aliens called Jammers (ghosts in Pac-Attack) which cannot be cleared via aligning and instead must be removed with a special blue-colored orb (Pac-Man himself in Pac-Attack) which goes in one direction but will change directions when it hits a solid block on the playfield's walls. This unique sphere can clear Jammers wherever it goes, but will shatter into many pieces and disappear if no Jammers are in its reach. If the player clear enough Jammers to fill a meter of the left side of the screen, a star will appear and will clear any Jammers in its reach whilst avoiding the solid blocks. Gameplay ends when the entire playfield is filled with Jammers and blocks.

Gameplay ends when the entire playfield is filled with Jammers and blocks.

There is also a two-player gamemode included in the arcade version and both Western and Japanese console ports. In this unique gamemode, players try to fill up their opponent's playfields by clearing huge amounts of Jammers, causing unwanted Jammers to drop into the opponent's playfield. The Jammers that Player 2 has are white robots called Pipopapo-Tai, unlike the pink Jammers that Player 1 has. If a player fills up their opponent's playfield, they will score a point. The first player to reach 3 points wins the game.

The console version and its Western port has a puzzle mode, where the player is given a certain amount of orbs to clear all the Jammers on each level. The level can be restarted by pressing the Start and Select buttons on the controller simultaneously, if the blocks and Jammers reach the top of the playfield, or the player runs out of orbs to clear Jammers with. For every ten levels completed, an intermission is played. There are over 100 levels in Puzzle Mode.

The game was released for the Wii Virtual Console as the console and arcade versions in 2008 and 2008 respectively, for the Wii U Virtual Console in 2015, and as part of the Arcade Archives series for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in 2024, courtesy of Hamster Corporation. The game was also rereleased as part of the Nintendo Switch Online Super NES game collection that September.
