Sonic CD has perhaps the finest music of any video game in the Hedgehog series. I don't know why the American release replaced the tracks with the generic crap they ultimately placed there, but the Jap version (which was released in English in Australia) has music that is so damn cool I can't put it into words!!

The music in this game is some of the best I've ever heard in video games. The Quartz Quadrant, Tidal Tempest, Metallic Madness, Collision Chaos, and Palmtree Panic music are cool, but the Stardust Speedway music REALLY takes the cake(especially the Present music)!I wonder why the Past music for the zones aren't here.

The special stage bgm is very oldskool rave. I mean break beat style, late 80's early 90's rave. Another example is Tidal Tempest - Bad Future. A few games of this era included some rave influenced tracks, such as Streets of Rage.

The japanese soundtrack is 10 times as good as the american one, but the us one is still very very very very good(with the exceptions of the game over music, boss theme and some good future tracks which sucks compared to the jp and other musics in any other agme).

To the guest:

The reason why the past sequence music is not present in the CD tracks are because all past sequence music is completely synthesized by the Genesis/Mega Drive and Sega CD/Mega CD console.

Only the present and future sequences have redbook CD audio that you can play in any ordinary CD player. You will have to record the past sequence music via the hidden sound test menu to listen to them later at your leisure.

I have to agree with you guys the Japanese Sonic Cd music is way more awesome than the American. They should have left the Japanese music on the American release.
