Because they sound retarded in English and all the Americans would complain.
Charmander, Bulbasaur, Pidgeot, Cyndaquil, Bayleef, and all the other American names were not derived from Japanese =/ and they sound better.
because americans suck when it comes to officially translateing things.
The Pokemon names aren't all translations. Sharpedo was definitely not a Japanese translation.
