There are just too many ways he could've get out of there: - He could make an illusion - He could block the attack - He could fake his death (like Xemnas and Axel) Or anything else you can think of. In my opinion, he is alive. But, although it's a possibility, I think he didn't block the attack. Rather faked death or made an illusion.
