Honestly, he decides "Hey, I'll open up a portal to TWTNW after I'm half-dead, you know, not earlier when it would have been of use". Axel's death was so overdone and over-dramatic, you can't feel sorry for the guy when all he does is whine and complain and die in a meaningless fashion
